The technical side: Designs compared A lens with just one element cannot change focus, and even if the focus by chance is correct, it would get it right for a single wavelength only, meaning one spectral color. We want to change the focus distance, while getting all colors sharp in a flat projection on the film or sensor, without much sharpness or brightness falloff towards the edges. This is done with additional elements which create optics much more complex than a single element. In the end it still functions a lot like a magnifier glass, but corrected for good image reproduction. Making fast lenses complicates the design
